A New Lens

Written by Lynn on August 17th, 2011

Soon my DSLR Canon Rebel will be four years old and out of the good warranty. To celebrate four fine years of service, I’m thinking of retiring it – i.e giving it to my husband – and buying a new camera. It makes sense to choose another Canon since I already have a couple of lenses and really want to buy another one soon.

I love my Sigma telephoto lens and hate the small lens that came with the camera. So I’m in the market for a smaller lens. I thought about checking into renting a lens before buying one to make sure that is the right lens for me. But I worry about not using it enough in four days to offset the cost of rental. If two of those days are work days, then most of the day will be gone. I would really need a longer time to evaluate a lens – which could mean I might rack up the money to buy one in rental fees.

I’ve just begun to think about a new lens – like today. So it will probably be a few months before I actually buy a lens. Any suggestions on a small range lens for a Canon Rebel?

Back to School

Written by Lynn on August 14th, 2011

Well we have finished the first week of school. Here is our first first day of school photo.

We went outside and took a few photos. It was hot and humid – so my lens kept fogging up. I was really beginning to think it was a bad idea to take photos outside. But a few turned out really cute. This one is my favorite. She’s a natural in front of the camera.

The ins and outs of working from home

Written by Lynn on August 10th, 2011

Even though there are many benefits attached to working from home, there are in fact a few steps required in order to make these benefits possible.

Such steps include establishing a good working environment and one that is separated from that of your home life. Create an office and utilise this space wisely, close the door of this office in order to block off any distractions such as television, other members of the household and also food temptations.

Having an office space that is separate from the rest of your home will allow you to shut the door on that work space when you are finished for the day, which in turn will allow you to enjoy your weekends and evenings. This way you won’t feel like you are at work when you are at home.

The best thing about working from home is that those who do so are able to cut out the commute, this doesn’t however mean you should get into the habit of commencing work later that normal, nor should it mean taking extra breaks or partaking in other distracting household chores.

Another must-have investment for your home office is a work telephone; many clients may come to the conclusion that because you work at home you will be in to answer their calls at any time, even after office hours. You should therefore invest in a separate phone line and one that comes complete with an answering service informing clients that your office hours are now over.

Working from home has an assortment of pros if tackled in the right way; one of the main benefits is the savings made on child care and fuel. Having the ability to work the hours to suit yourself and still being there for your children is every parents dream. First Day of School Photo

Written by Lynn on August 5th, 2011

Monday my daughter starts school. She will be in kindergarten and is very excited. I’m very excited, too. I want her day to go very well. On my Facebook page, the wall is full of people taking first day of school photos of their kids. Monday we will take our first first day of school photo.

We will have to take it at home since we aren’t allowed to get out of our vehicle when we drop her off. This will really stall the carpool line if everyone was allowed to get out. Some pictures have kids with their backpacks standing beside the car of waiting for the school bus. We dropped off her backpack with her school supplies already, so she won’t have that school accessory. We may have to improvise. She will have her lunch box, so at least you will be able to tell she is going to school.

We still have a few days to plan out some photos.

Marigolds

Written by Lynn on July 24th, 2011

In one planter, I planted some marigolds. They all buy died during the unbearable heat. Full sun my rear-end. Full sun in the south is way longer than 8 hours. But today I was surprised to find the marigolds had come back. What is even more surprising is their color.

When these were first planted, the marigolds were more yellow than orange. I like these better – of course I love the color orange. So I may give those dead flowers a few more weeks to spring back to life before I replant them.

This Year’s Sunflowers

Last year my Mom planted some sunflowers in the garden. Here is one that came back this year. I love this sunflower species – such rich, vibrant colors.

Week in Pics

Written by Lynn on May 1st, 2011

In what probably will be a vain attempt on my part, I plan to start a week in pics blog post on Sundays. This will be sort of a brain dump of all the things I’ve taken pictures of and have half-baked blog ideas for. If I just roll them all together, then maybe it will be something worth viewing and reading. So this is the first week which covers April 24(Easter) to April 30. In the coming weeks I will probably toss in some older pictures to clear out my mental to-do list.

An Easter pic taken with my phone. I started out the day with my Canon Rebel but by the time it was down to egg hunting, it was getting pretty heavy.

Rae found a bug when we were babysitting her little cousin. She loves bugs and crawly things. Sometimes I wonder how we are kin.

Saturday we went to a rugby game at the university. It was interesting. I didn’t understand a lot that was going on but still fun. Rae posed after the game on the sideline.

Afterwards we went to Books-a-million where it was a lot cooler. Rae round the perfect princess hat. I love their big hats they now carry. I’m sure they have a big price tag, too.

I thought this was really cute as I’m not much of a twitterer.

And this is something I need for my husband -

That has been our week. Now I feel better for sharing those things that I thought were most interesting.

Earth Day

Written by Lynn on April 22nd, 2011

Today is Good Friday and Earth Day. I like to think of everyday as earth day – trying to take care of the earth and leave it in a better place than we found it. That’s our philosophy about places that we have rented – try to leave it in better shape for the next tenants. This spring I have been doing some flower planting and ‘landscaping.’ I have been using mainly what I can find around the house to reuse and save money.

This one is from my Mom’s yard -

Just some pretty flowers from my Mom’s yard -

I’m enjoying this new found love of flower gardening. Very therapeutic and pretty at the same time.

Daughter

Written by Lynn on April 19th, 2011

It seems lately the only pictures I have been snapping are for eBay. I did snap this one of my daughter that I just adore. She always has a pose for the camera – plus she has become quite the shutterbug. She loves taking pictures with my camera. Some are actually pretty good. I remember having my first camera and taking pictures very carefully since you only had 24 on a roll of film. You just couldn’t take a picture of anything. My daughter will shoot 24 pictures in five minutes. She would be terribly disappointed if she couldn’t instantly see the photo, too. She would have never made it having to wait a week for developing film back in the day.

Seeing this photo inspires me to take more pictures. I feel sometimes that I forget what I like to do like taking pictures. It is nice to be reminded again especially by such a sweet face.

Future Photographer

My kid loves to take photos. I recently let her us my good camera to snap a few shots. She’s very cautious with it – if she wasn’t then I wouldn’t let take photos. She does seem interested in framing up shots, zooming in, and such. She loves to review the photos, too. I thought about finding a cheap digital camera on eBay for her. She uses my old one but she really needs one with bigger buttons and a rechargeable battery.

When the weather is nice, we may have to take some trips just for photo taking. The zoo is always a good destination as well as local parks. We like to encourage her interests and especially if it is one of ours.
